I. What is XDR?

XDR (eXtreme Data Rate) is the eighth-generation speed standard for InfiniBand technology. Positioned as the next-generation evolution of NDR, it aims to increase the single-port data rate to 800 Gbps and is specifically designed for next-generation hyperscale AI clusters and supercomputing centers.

As the successor to NDR (400 Gbps), it is the next-generation InfiniBand standard designed to address the extreme demand for higher bandwidth and lower latency in future scenarios such as large-scale model training and scientific computing.

III. Key Improvements Over Previous-Generation NDR
Compared to the previous-generation NDR (400 Gbps), XDR delivers another significant leap in performance:
1. Doubled Bandwidth: The per-port speed has increased from 400 Gbps to 800 Gbps, effectively doubling data throughput.
2. Optimized Port Density: Through a more efficient interface design, higher port density is achieved within the same physical space, supporting larger-scale clusters.
3. System Capacity Expansion: Next-generation InfiniBand switches (such as the NVIDIA Quantum-3 platform) will support greater switching capacity, enabling hyperscale clusters comprising tens of thousands of GPUs.
4. Enhanced AI Acceleration Capabilities: The performance of the built-in AI acceleration engine will be further improved, optimizing collective communication operations such as NCCL and SHARP to further reduce training latency.

XDR InfiniBand is a future-oriented high-speed interconnect technology primarily used in the following areas:

Next-generation large-scale model training: Enables high-speed parameter synchronization and gradient aggregation among tens of thousands of GPUs, reducing training cycles from weeks to days.

Exascale-class supercomputing: Enables efficient interconnectivity for exaFLOPS-level computing power in cutting-edge scientific fields such as climate simulation, nuclear physics, and astrophysics.

Real-time AI Inference: Providing real-time data processing capabilities with microsecond-level latency for scenarios such as autonomous driving and the Industrial Internet.

Enhanced GPU Direct Memory Access (GPUDirect RDMA): Further optimizing direct data exchange between GPUs, eliminating CPU bottlenecks, and improving computational efficiency.

 

V. Typical Network Design Architecture

The current NDR topology serves as an ideal foundation for a smooth evolution to XDR:

Hardware Compatibility: ConnectX-7 network cards and Quantum-2 switches can support the XDR400 (400 Gbps) sub-rate via firmware upgrades, protecting existing investments.

Architectural Compatibility: The spine-leaf architecture inherently supports higher bandwidth; upgrading only the optical modules and switches enables a seamless transition to the XDR era.

Expected Performance Gains: Upgrading from NDR to XDR increases per-server link bandwidth from 3.2 Tbps to 6.4 Tbps, with overall cluster performance improving by approximately 50%–100%.

 

VI. Technology Evolution Roadmap

The evolution roadmap for InfiniBand technology is clear, with even higher-performance standards following XDR:

Next Generation: XDR (800 Gbps)
